Three of my friends and I were nervous to go to Guatemala on our women's mission trip. We had not been on a trip like this. We had, in fact, for so long, been the ones helping others to be the feet on the ground. It was our turn, and these three women prayed for God to use them in a specific way to help the people in El Cimiento, our village, located an hour up a mountain in Guatemala. Here is what they did:
Jenniffer used cute reading glasses as we painted the ladies' nails. One lady asked if she could try on her glasses, and she gasped as she could see clearly! Jen gave the lady her glasses and both were overjoyed. Obviously, the ladies in the villages needed reading glasses, so when Jenniffer came home, she created a post on Instagram, contacted friends, and sent a box of reading glasses to Guatemala!
Diane served faithfully and loved the children in the village. Her positive attitude was contagious! She could see that the school had a huge need for Spanish books, so she made it happen! Diane figured out how to contact publishers and get boxes of Spanish books donated to create a library in the elementary school. She boxed them and mailed them to our ministry partner in Guatemala! When I went back, our team got to present Diane's books to the principal of the school; and all the children cheered and yelled, "Gracias!" to Diane on video!
And finally, my sweet friend, Amy was moved to action by a homeless single mom with six children, two of whom required special medication. She promised them she would build them a house, and she did! Within months, she personally raised the money and a house was built for this precious family!
So what does it mean to partner with God to do something great?
Well, from my observation, people who ask God to show them a need, always see a need. It is usually bigger than their ability and requires faith and action.
Does partnering with God sound amazing, yet scary? Ask him what he would have you do, and then keep your eyes open. Like my three friends, you may see a common need that you did not notice before. Just be available and pray. God can help you to be bold and courageous. You may surprise yourself, for God is looking for normal people to do big things!
